KCSIE & Compliance with the UK Online Safety Act (2023)
While Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are legal in the UK and most democracies, according to the UK Online Safety Act, platforms have a clear responsibility to prevent children from bypassing safety and safeguarding protections, as many of them are not based in the UK this is technically and practically unenforceable, leaving organisations like network providers, schools and colleges to prevent the bypassing of safety or safeguarding protections, i.e. block VPNs effectively and all that goes along with that to not break anything else.
Many countries are now adopting a similar dusposition as the harms of some social media and other unrestricted Internet content are become increasingly evident.
